Evidence and source limits

FDA announced accelerated approval of Forzinity (elamipretide) injection on September 19, 2025 for Barth syndrome in patients weighing at least 30 kg. This is a defined prescription-product indication.

Proponents also describe SS-31 as a mitochondrial or healthy-aging compound. The Barth-syndrome approval does not establish benefit for healthy people, anti-aging or unrelated research-chemical preparations.

FDA based accelerated approval on knee-muscle strength considered reasonably likely to predict patient benefit. A confirmatory trial is required. Injection-site reactions and serious reactions have been reported. No dosing or administration instructions are provided.
